Native Youth Olympics
Throughout the state youth from all traditions in grades 1 through 12 practice and compete in community Native Youth Games during the year under instruction by coaches. Many schools teach the Native games as part of their physical education curriculum. The traditional Native games include the kneel jump, stick pull, seal hop, two foot high kick, wrist carry, Alaskan high kick, one foot high kick, Indian stick pull, toe kick, and leg wrestling.

Program Description

Program Purpose
The purpose of the NYO Games Alaska is to promote -- * healthy lifestyles, positive self-esteem, and leadership skills; * an appreciation of Alaska Native traditions; and * good sportsmanship through friendly athletic competition.

Program Key Features
CITC hosts three NYO Games Alaska events annually in Anchorage. They include the following three events: * The Junior NYO Games Alaska The Junior NYO Games are held for two days during the month of January in Anchorage. Schools throughout the state register and send their 1st-6th grade student teams to participate in 9 games. * The Anchorage Preliminary NYO Games Alaska The Preliminary Native Youth Games are held one day during the month of April. Anchorage student teams in grades 7-12 schools register and try out for a position on the Anchorage Team for the statewide senior NYO Games Alaska event. * The Senior NYO Games Alaska The statewide Senior NYO Games are held for three days during the month of May in Anchorage. Schools throughout the state register and send their qualifying student teams from grades 7 - 12 to participate in 9 traditional games.
