Program: SD American Indian Health Center Health & Fitness Day

What

General Exercise

The San Diego American Indian health Center & Fitness Day will take place on April 9, 2005. Our Kids Korps USA Native American Chapter is collaborating w/the health center to educate our Indian community about the importance of exercise and good health. We will conduct an exercise program with the kids, jumping rope, etc., while the parents become acquainted with the services of the health center. There will be safety demonstrations for car seats and bike helmets as well as an Indian Police officer who will speak about Stranger Danger. I have a friend of mine coming who wrote the book Superfoods RX Dr. Steve Pratt who will speak to the families during their healthy lunch that we'll provide about the foods they are eating and their health benefits, our intent is to make it fun as well. We will raffle off 4 donated bikes w/helmets.

At the San Diego Health Center in Hillcrest

Program Purpose:
The purpose is to acquaint the families with not only the health center but to introduce them to our Kids Korps USA Native American Chapter. We will have our native kids and parents as volunteers that day. Kids Korps USA is a 501 C 3 nonprofit youth volunteer organization that engages young people, ages 5-18 in community service. In addition, we hope to show the kids that exercising can be fun and get them thinking about healthy food choices.

Program Key Features:
We have an agenda but basically the families will start with a tour of the health center and have an opportunity to update their children's immunizations. We will then lead the kids in exercise after which they will receive a sticker to show they've exercised their hearts. There will be safety demonstrations by an Indian San Diego Police Officer and a Fireman. There will be guest speakers on nutrition during the healthy lunch that our volunteers will be serving. Each person in attendance will be given a raffle ticket for an opportunity to win bicycles and books and hopefully all will get a water bottle.

Most Excited About:
That my friend and author Dr. Steve Pratt will be donating his time to speak to our people about nutrition and health and the great native foods. He's been on the Oprah Winfrey show, and every news and morning program and presently is working on his second book.
