Description:
Low levels of physical activity in kids increases their risk of health problems, especially diabetes and heart disease. The Hualapai Youth Wellness Project aims to increase physical activity in youth in the Hualapai community. Physical activities occur in the elementary school and during winter, spring and summer school breaks. Age groups in the school range from K to 6 (youth ages 5 to 13 years). For community events, the age range is 9 to 17 years. Activities take place at the elementary school and community events, and have been over 2 years. Activities include: SPARKS based PE for grades K-6, Family Fun Nights, and a wide range activities during the holiday breaks, e.g. a climbing wall, low and high ropes course and multi-day healthy lifestyle camps. Our partners are the Peach Springs Elementary School, a Community Wellness Team (a community coalition), University of Arizona, Hualapai Tribal Council, and Inter-Tribal Council Arizona.

Most proud of or excited about:
We are most excited about the kids learning and having fun at the same time. We are also proud to be recognized by the kids and community members who are enjoying what the program has to offer.
