Description:
This weekly community walk is held in conjunction with our summer quarterly walking programs. Our purpose is to get the community together in a healthy activity, encourage walking programs and show that exercise (dancing, parade, music - oldies) can be fun. We begin and end at different places in the community of Kake, Alaska. The event is open to all age groups. Three generations of walkers have joined us for our Saturday walks. Summer 2004 was the 2nd year of this activity. All community organizations are invited to "sponsor" walks (i.e. sponsor will host event by designating their place/ location as the starting point and/or finish line, and they may donate/provide refreshments).
Key features of the walks are:
Each week we had a different musical theme (Beatles, Patsy Cline, oldies, CCR, Elvis), and the music was played in the ambulance, with the mayor talking in the loudspeaker--encouraging the walkers and promoting our walking program. It was a regular parade, and people would come out of their houses to take pictures.
We got the idea for the walks from our South East Alaska Regional Health Consortium co-workers. They were originally doing Saturday hikes in the woods, bird watching, etc., and we modified it to the Saturday walks.
Most proud of or excited about:
The walks are a fun, healthy activity for the community that everyone looks forward to.
Description of pictures:
July 3, 2004 - Saturday walk to honor our veterans and in memory of those people from our community who had passed on the year before.
