The Native American Health Center Nutrition and Fitness Department, Oakland California, has developed a 12 week walking and nutrition education manual as part of a community focused prevention initiative, On the Move (OTM). The purpose of the manual is to introduce the program and give guidance for the steps of successful implementation of the project with room for expansion and individualization for other agencies. As a Just Move It (JMI) partner, OTM wishes to share the developed program manual, with other communities.

This manual is a template -- almost a "turnkey" program -- for increasing physical activity and improving nutrition in your community. Each community implementing such program will modify it for their own needs and time of year for fruit and vegetable availability. The OTM program is made possible through the United States Department of Agriculture Food Stamp Program, as part of Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section of the California Department of Health Services.

The OTM program strives to provide inner city and rural communities with an accessible opportunity to live healthier, longer lives. Ideally, the program will increase the number of low-income community members who consume at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day and complete at least 10,000 steps (approximately 5 miles) each day as measured by a pedometer. OTM is a twelve week program, which helps enforce healthy behavior changes and modifications that require a consistent effort and reinforcement to be successful. The program is structured to build the skill set of the participants to help them make better choices for their health, nutrition, and physical activity levels.
