Activity Report: 2nd Annual Diabetes/Wellness Health Fair

Completed 11/17/06 with 300 participants
This was the 2nd annual Health Fair hosted by the Ohkay Owingeh Wellness Center. There were over 300 people from San Juan Pueblo and surrounding community that participated. There were 20 plus health related information booths including American Cancer Society,  Tribal programs,  massage therapists, a local health food store, and a  Naturopath Physician. Besides information on all kinds of health issues we had a cholesterol screening,  blood pressure and body mass index check, yoga demonstration, health fitness assessment,  and flu  vaccine provided.   The community  school youth and other adults (25-30) particiapted in a 1 mile walk.  Lunch was provided and then a line dance demonstration by the Ohkay Owingeh Senior group. It was a huge success.

Best Features:
The best part was the Senior line dancing demonstration and the walk. The event catered to all age groups.

Creative Features:
To get more participants and attract a large variety of community peoples providing flu shots given by the local public health department and Indian Health service was the most creative.

Challenges:
Challenges always include getting enough volunters to help direct and register people also finding a large enough facility that is available for an event that can hold a large group.

Future Plans:
We will continue to incorporate fitness activites every month along with health promotion education at the community school and the Elementary Tewa classes. We also will support Senior Olympics by hosting weekly a ctivity that promotes increasing strength, flexibilty and endurance.

Lessons Learned

We started planning ahead 3-4 months, letters were sent out in plenty of time to invite vendors with a reasonable deadline for response.
